About AGATHĒ Builders
When Mitch Chan and Tom Stewart founded this company in 2019, they chose a name in ancient Greek — agathē, meaning goodness. Not clever, not catchy. Goodness.
Not goodness in the sense of compliance. Goodness in its deeper sense: character, ethics, the way you treat people when no one is watching. Every decision since has been made with that word in mind — how we plan, how we build, who we work with, and how we leave a home when we're done.
We build on the North Shore, Northern Beaches, Hills District, Central Coast, and Newcastle.

Founder & Director — Site & Delivery
Mitch has been building on the North Shore and Northern Beaches for over 11 years. He holds a Certificate IV in Building & Construction and a Certificate III in Carpentry & Joinery — and he didn't stop there.
Mitch became fascinated by what was happening behind the walls. What was the vapour pressure doing? Where was the thermal bridging? Was the EMF from the wiring layout going to affect the family sleeping on the other side?
"I kept seeing the same problems behind the walls of homes that looked beautiful at handover. Nobody was asking the right questions before they built."
That curiosity led him deep into building biology and healthy-home science — specialist fields within residential building. He's currently completing an Advanced Diploma in Building Biology, is a certified graduate of the Healthy Home Materials Mastermind (2025), and is a certified Passive House Tradesperson.
Outside of work, Mitch is married and spends his time outdoors — hiking, adventuring, and looking for what's over the next ridge. That same instinct to push further drives how he approaches every build.

Director — Pre-Construction & Client Experience
Tom brings 14 years of custom residential construction experience — and a degree in Philosophy, English Literature, and Latin from the University of Sydney.
That combination sounds unusual. It isn't. Building a custom home is one of the most complex things most people will ever do. It requires clear thinking, careful communication, and someone who can translate between the world of architects, engineers, clients, and tradespeople without losing anything in the process.
"Most project blow-outs don't happen on site. They happen in the weeks before a shovel goes in the ground — when nobody stops to ask the hard questions. That's where I live."
Tom runs AGATHĒ's pre-construction process — a structured approach to planning, budgeting, and design alignment that happens before construction starts. His clients call him the PAC Man. It's the phase of a build Tom has made his speciality — the upfront planning that makes the rest run smoothly.
Tom is married with a growing family. He reads widely — history, philosophy, narrative — and spends time sailing, kayaking, and finding excuses to be on or near water. He approaches building the way he approaches most things: with rigour, and the belief that it's worth understanding something properly before you begin.
The people who carry the work forward on site and behind the scenes — selected because they care about doing things properly, not just quickly.

Project Manager & Site Supervisor
Matt has spent over a decade in residential construction, holding dual qualifications across carpentry and construction management. His approach on site is methodical and calm — the kind of person clients trust to make good calls when things get complicated.

Project Manager & Site Supervisor
Sixteen years of building experience across multiple continents — including traditional greenwood framing in Wales and straw-bale and post-and-beam construction. Alex brings a deep understanding of how buildings work from first principles. When he's not on site he's in the workshop, on a rock face, or somewhere in the backcountry on a snowboard.
Leading Hand Carpenter
A fully licensed builder and qualified carpenter, Andrew leads carpentry on site as our leading hand, keeping the day-to-day build moving while holding the line on quality and detail. Off the tools he's usually outdoors, prospecting, camping, or polishing opals, and back in the shed he builds furniture from solid timber slabs. It's the same feel for timber that shows up in his work every day.
Carpenter
Originally from Brazil and in Australia for close to a decade, Rafael, known to the team as Rav, came to carpentry from an unusual starting point: a degree in game design. Seven years on the tools later, it's the hands-on craft he loves most, and it shows in the careful, precise work he's known for. Away from site, his creative side keeps going with art, drawing and playing music.

Apprentice Carpenter — 2nd Year
Sam is easy-going on site but brings genuine enthusiasm for the craft. He's developing quickly and has a natural instinct for doing things right the first time. Exactly who you want coming up through the ranks.

Apprentice Carpenter & Interior Designer
Before joining AGATHĒ, George spent five years in interior design. That background gives him an unusual eye for how spaces work and how a build decision today shapes what a homeowner lives with for the next 20 years.

Marketing & Administration
Ange joined AGATHĒ because she was drawn to the purpose behind the business. She looks after how we communicate — with clients, with the public, and with the wider building community — and helps shape the stories behind the work.

Accounts Manager
Aiziel keeps AGATHĒ's finances in order — managing accounts, bookkeeping, and the financial side of the business so the team on site and in pre-construction can focus on delivering great work.
A few things we work hard to get right, and keep getting better at.
Mitch and Tom are active participants in every project. When you have a question, you speak with someone who knows your build and can make the call. That direct involvement shapes the quality of what gets built.
We are genuinely curious about how buildings work, and we keep studying: building biology, healthy materials science, passive performance principles, and the thermal and moisture dynamics that decide whether a home performs for twenty years or starts showing problems at year three. That ongoing learning shapes the decisions we make before a single frame goes up.
Our PAC Process (Preliminary Assessment and Consultation) works through scope, budget, and design alignment before the build starts. Clients head into construction with a clear plan and far fewer surprises, and the investment in planning pays back many times over.
We think about how your home performs in five, ten, and twenty years: the air quality, the energy efficiency, the material health, the structural longevity. The decisions that determine all of that happen at design stage, not fit-out. Getting them right takes extra care, and we believe it is worth it.
"Tom has been outstanding at every stage, proactive, solutions-focused, and always keeping things on track. The entire Agathe team, along with their contractors, have been a pleasure to work with. Without a doubt, they're the best builders I've worked with."
"We chose Agathe for our home renovation and couldn't be happier with the result. Mitch and his team are honest, reliable, and take pride in their work, ensuring all our requirements were met."
"They were also wonderful to work with, their team is really nice, friendly and hard working. Tom and Mitch are stand up guys. We will 100% have them back to work on other things for us in the future!"
"Mitch and the team are highly professional, respectful and very reliable. I've worked alongside them on many projects that are not only well organised but finished to a high standard."
